Welcome to Roedde House: A Window to the Past, an interactive exploration of Roedde House Museum on 1415 Barclay Street in Vancouver, British Columbia. Gustav Adolph Heinrich Roedde and his wife Matilda built their house in 1893. Mr. Roedde arrived in Vancouver in 1886, the same year the Canadian Pacific Railway steamed into town. Mr. Roedde was Vancouver's first bookbinder. The Roedde House Museum was established to preserve this important piece of pioneer history, and to recreate the experience of a middle class turn-of-the-century house in Vancouver's West End.

This web site is based on the museum's award winning curriculum package "A Window to the Past" written by Katherine Reeder and Vickie Jensen. Activities in this site are designed to complement the B.C. Social Studies curriculum for Grade 5, but students of all ages will enjoy participating. This web site is divided into a series of narrative journeys through four themes. You may access these themes by clicking on the side navigation bar, and narrate further within each theme by clicking the subheadings at the top of the page. Here is a brief introduction to some of the characters you will meet along the way:

HOUSE TOUR

door

"My name is Hoggle, and I'm the Roedde House front door! Since I hang in the doorway all the time, and watch people come and go, I think I am the foremost authority on how the Roedde House was built and how it is important architecturally! I will do my best to teach you all I know about the inside and outside of the house, and I hope it will give you some ideas about how homes are built, both then and today!"

FAMILY FUN

Gwen

"My name is Gwen, and I'm the granddaughter of Gustav and Matilda Roedde. As I introduce you to my family, we will do some activities that will help you learn more about family life at the turn of the century and your own family."

HOUSE TREASURES

bear

"I'm Barclay, Roedde House's resident teddy bear. I'll be your guide to all the treasured objects in the house (not just the toys!) I've got a bunch of fun activities to help you improve your visual and analytical skills."

OLD VANCOUVER

Gassy Jack

"Hi, I'm John "Gassy Jack" Deighton. I was a riverboat captain in the United States before I came to Vancouver. My saloon, The Deighton Hotel, was built overnight by the workers of Hastings Mill, thanks to my smooth talk and a barrel of whiskey. As the founding father of Gastown, which became Granville Townsite and eventually the city of Vancouver. I am the best person to guide you through Old Vancouver. I can't let you in the saloon, but if you sit on the Roedde House porch with me, I'll tell you all about Vancouver, past and present."
