The first settlers on Sable Island came with the lifesaving
station built in 1737. For
the next 150 years, people relied on the horses for transportation.
Lifesaving
Men rode around the island twice a day, on the lookout for
ships in distress.
Horses hauled
lifeboats and lifesaving gear to wreck sites.
