• Generate a classroom discussion about the plight of refugees.
  • Define the term and what it means.
  • What is the difference between a refugee and an immigrant?
  • Have students clip articles for the newspaper or refer to the news. How many references to refugees can they find?
  • What other sources of information can students suggest? That is books, advertising, movies, television shows, videos, etc.
  • Do your students know of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees? If so, what have they heard? What do they know about it? Can they name any other organizations or individuals associated with the plight of refugees? Make a list on the board. For example, do students know that Canada is among the top 10 or 12 donors in the world to UNHCR through its humanitarian assistance program funded though the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)?
  • Please note: educators should be sensitive to the presence of refugee children in the classroom and must avoid putting them on the spot. Allow them the choice to tell their stories if they wish.
