• Have students complete at least two of the following:

    1. Design a promotional campaign around the theme of the awarding of the Nansen Medal. The elements of the campaign may include a poster, mural, print, radio and/or television advertising. Put all the elements of the campaign together, including a written strategy outlining the goals and objectives and present them to the rest of the class.

    2. Pretend you are a refugee who has just settled in this country after a long journey. Write a poem to describe your feelings based on your experiences.

    3. Same as above, but instead of writing a poem, write a song about your experiences. Record the song on tape or perform it for the class. This may be done individually or as a group.

    4. Choose on the following historical figures: Lester B. Pearson, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Schweitzer, Eleanor Roosevelt, Valery Giscard d'Estaing, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. Imagine that the individual you have selected is about to address a general assembly of the United Nations about the plight of refugees today. Write the speech the person is to give and then, deliver it to the class as if you were that person. The class may set itself up like the United Nations, where there are delegates from different countries represented.

    5. Who knows what alienation feels like? Particularly, if you are excluded from a group or society because of your status. Create a performance art piece, which may call on a number of disciplines such as music, dance, mime, theatre, to explore the theme of alienation within society. This should be a collective and collaborative project and the framework should be discussed and determined within the group. Once that has been established, members divide up roles, rehearse the piece, then perform it for the class.

    6. Your family is under persecution in your home country. Write a play about your family meeting. Does everyone want to go? Where do you think you might go? Do people have different suggestions? How do you think you will get to where you are going? What do you think your new life is like?

    7. Draw a picture or make a sculpture of your idea of a refugee. Why did you choose that particular face or image?

    8. Create a TV commercial to broadcast the plight of refugees. Tape it or perform it to the class. Was it an effective means to get your point across? If so, how?
