Grains of Canada

Many kinds of grain are grown throughout Canada. Under the Canada Grain Act, some of them are designated as official grains. Any other grains are not considered official grains and are, therefore, not regulated by the Canada Grain Act.

Official grains of Canada

We offer detailed information for each of the regulated grains. They are organized into categories depending on the type of grain.

  • Cereals: Barley, oats, rye, triticale and wheat
  • Oilseeds: Canola, flaxseed, mustard, rapeseed, safflower seed, soybeans and sunflower seed
  • Pulses: Beans, chick peas, fababeans, lentils and peas
  • Mixed grain: Mixture of wheat, rye, barley, oats, triticale, wild oats and domestic or wild oat groats
  • Other crops: Buckwheat and corn

Unofficial grains of Canada

Some Canadian producers grow grains that are not covered under the Canada Grain Act. The Canadian Grain Commission provides information about these grains for informational purposes only.
