Poets in the Schools Programs
Canadians
have developed some world-leading programs in poetry
education.
- The League of Canadian Poets
offers a unique opportunity for Ontario students to
meet, hear and talk with published Canadian poets.
Through the Poets
in the Schools programme, poets will visit
classrooms to read from their work, conduct creative
writing workshops, talk about the craft of writing
poetry, or discuss other related topics.
- The Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia administers a Writers in the Schools Program. Teachers can order up classroom
visits by a poet (or any other kind of writer, too). For the latest brochure,
check here.
- WIER WIER The
Writers in Electronic Residence program, administered
by the Canadian Education Association in partnership
with the Faculty of Education at York University,
links classes of students in K-12 schools from across
the country, east, west, north, and south, with some
of the country's finest writers, for electronic
mentoring and workshops. This is
- definitely a classy program.
- A complementary poetry education site is A
Poet Born, which provides on-line lessons in many
areas of poetry. They invite papers, on any type or
area of poetry, which teach a particular lesson in the
genre.
- About.Com provides an extensive guide to creative
writing sites to use with teens. There's
a lot of great stuff
here.
- Our
Youngpoets site offers workshop ideas and lesson
plans for teachers
teaching writing.
- And
before you go, do check out Brainevent,
a brand-new website for teenage
writers/readers/thinkers/debaters/
complainers/contrarians.
