Children and Adolescents with Special Needs

The Centre raises awareness on prevention, early intervention, services and policy related to special needs children and adolescents. Particular attention is given to children living in northern and rural Canada.

CECASN is sponsored by Lakehead University and works in partnership with:

  • Memorial University of Newfoundland
  • University of Northern British Columbia
  • Mount Saint Vincent University
  • the Government of Nunavut

What CECASN Does:

  • Provides readily accessible information and resources
  • Advises municipal, provincial and territorial organizations and communities on policy
  • Promotes regional and community activities
  • Coordinates meetings with federal departments, Aboriginal organizations, community members and researchers on special needs programs

Did You Know?

"Special needs" refers to the needs of children and teens who require additional resources to support their development.

Special needs can include:

  • exceptional gifts and talents,
  • physical, sensory, cognitive and learning challenges
  • mental health issues
  • problems due to social, cultural, linguistic or family factors.
