Healthy Living Fund

The Healthy Living Fund is a program that makes strategic investments to address the conditions that lead to unhealthy eating, physical inactivity and unhealthy weights. Projects supported through the fund will aim to reduce health disparities by focusing on vulnerable populations and related settings for action.

The Healthy Living Fund has a National Stream and a Regional Stream.

National Stream

The purpose of the National Stream of the Healthy Living Fund is to support time-limited activities that contribute to objectives within the policy framework of the Integrated Pan-Canadian Healthy Living Strategy. Contribution funding targets Canadian voluntary, not-for-profit organizations that want to undertake national initiatives that directly support the Agency’s mandate, goals and priorities in the area of physical activity, healthy eating and their relationship to healthy weights. At this time, funding under the National Stream of the Healthy Living Fund has been fully allocated.

Regional Stream: Bilateral Agreements on Physical Activity and Healthy Eating

The regional stream of the fund takes the form of bilateral agreements on physical activity and healthy eating between the Public Health Agency of Canada and provincial/territorial governments. Both levels of government set priorities jointly, issue solicitations, review project proposals jointly, and invest funds that go directly to non-governmental organizations in support of joint priorities. Each level of government invests approximately the same amount of funding over the life of the agreements.

The bilateral agreements seek to promote health by addressing the conditions that support healthy eating, physical activity and healthy weights. These agreements support the goals of the Integrated Pan-Canadian Healthy Living Strategy, to improve health outcomes and to reduce health disparities.

Projects funded through these agreements will contribute to the achievement of the federal/provincial/territorial target set by federal, provincial and territorial Ministers responsible for sport, physical activity and recreation (excluding Quebec) to increase physical activity in every province and territory in Canada by 10 percentage points by the year 2010 and the healthy living targets set by Ministers of Health (excluding Quebec) to obtain a 20 per cent increase in the proportion of Canadians who are physically active, eat healthily and are at healthy body weights.
