Importation Permits

In 1994 Health Canada introduced regulations to control the importation of human pathogens and to ensure proper laboratory handling and containment of these pathogens. Importation permits are issued by the Pathogen Regulation Directorate, Biosafety Division after appropriate evaluation and approval of laboratory facilities.

Reference should be made to the Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines for information on the laboratory standards and containment levels required. See also the leaflet What You Should Know About Importing Human Pathogens into Canada, available from the Office of Laboratory Security, Biosafety Division.
