Question: What is "Secure Desktop Delivery"?
Answer: NRC-CISTI has developed a system that allows users to order documents on the Web and have them delivered to their desktop in a format compatible with ACROBAT reader. You will be able to view and print each copyright-cleared document once.
Question: What are the advantages of Secure Desktop Delivery?
Answer: Secure Desktop Delivery is quick and reliable and can alleviate problems associated with other methods of delivery, such as fax quality, firewalls and email server restrictions.
Question: What are the technical requirements for receiving documents via Secure Desktop Delivery?
Answer: NRC-CISTI's Secure Desktop Delivery is designed for use in a Windows environment (Windows 98 or higher) with current versions of Netscape or Internet Explorer. SDD works well with Acrobat 4 or greater. Should you have any difficulty receiving your SDD documents, please contact us.
Question: How will I know when the documents I ordered are ready?
Answer: You will receive one email notification for each document that you order.
Question: How much will documents cost through the system?
Answer: NRC-CISTI will not charge extra for Secure Desktop Delivery. The NRC-CISTI service fee is the same as for other electronic delivery methods, plus applicable copyright fees. Some copyright fees differ from those applied for other delivery methods. View Document Delivery prices.
Question: If Secure Desktop Delivery is my preferred method of delivery, but the document I requested is not available for SDD delivery how will I receive the document?
Answer: In rare cases, we may not be able to deliver your document via SDD. In those cases, your document will be sent using an alternate delivery method. When you register for SDD delivery or change your current preferred method of delivery to SDD, you will also be asked to select an alternate delivery method.
Question: Do I have to have a Windows operating system to be able to use SDD?
Answer: No, you don't have to have Windows. There's a plug-in for Macintosh users available from FileOpen Systems.
Question: Why do I need a plug-in in order to obtain my articles from the NRC-CISTI web server?
Answer: . The Internet is a very open environment, and publishers do not allow NRC-CISTI to make articles from its Document Delivery service freely available via the Web. The plug-in enables NRC-CISTI to provide documents to clients on the Web while respecting the restrictions imposed by the rights holders. NRC-CISTI's customized plug-in does not require authentication by Adobe Acrobat for each document downloaded and is available free of charge.
Question: Is the plug-in complicated to install?
Answer: No, the plug-in is small and easy to use and is actually simpler than some other systems. Downloading and installation is quick and easy and needs to be done only once before you can start using SDD. We recommend that you install the plug-in on your desktop so that, if for any reason, the plugin seems to have been inadvertantly "uninstalled", all you need to do is go to the desktop and double-click on "FileOpenInstaller.msi" to reinstall the plug-in.
Question: Is the plug-in available from Adobe?
Answer: No, the plug-in is not available from Adobe. It is available either at the NRC-CISTI site on the Secure Desktop Delivery page , or from FileOpen.
Question: Can I get more information about the plug-in?
Answer: Yes. There is more information available at FileOpen or contact us.
Question: My organization restricts the use of plug-ins. Where can I find information on the plug-in which I can provide to our systems administrators?
Answer: For more information about the plug-in, contact us.
Question: How long is my document available to me after I order it?
Answer: The document will be scanned and delivered to the Web server usually within 24 hours of your order. After you have viewed and printed the document, you will not be able to view and print again; however the citation, or bibliographic information about the document will remain online until the end of the three-week period.
Question: If the system only lets me print once, what do I do if my printer runs out of paper while I am printing the document and I can't make a second copy?
Answer: Contact us to reset the document access information on the SDD Web server. This will make it possible for you to print one more copy.
Question: I may not always want to have my documents delivered by Secure Desktop Delivery. What do you recommend?
Answer: You will need to have two accounts - one for SDD delivery and one for a different delivery method.
Question: If I order from NRC-CISTI using OCLC, can I still have my document delivered by Secure Desktop Delivery?
Answer: Yes. Your delivery method is determined by the information in your NRC-CISTI account and you can continue to order as usual. If you have more than one NRC-CISTI account number and are ordering through OCLC, enter the account number that you want to use into the borrowing notes on the OCLC order form, in the format: **CAIaccount no** (e.g. **CAIfghxxxxx**)
Question: I order documents on behalf of other clients within my organization. Can I forward documents on to them?
Answer: Yes, you can forward the email notification to your client who will then be able to view and print the document once. Your clients will not need an account number to view their documents, but will need to have the plug-in downloaded on their desktop. The client contact information that you provide when you order will be included on the email notification. This will make it easy for you to identify who should receive the documents.
Important information to know: To ensure that your clients will be able to view their documents, do not preview documents before forwarding them to your clients.
