90 RIVER ROAD - Winnipeg, Manitoba![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Originally designed as the Gaboury residence, the home was built in the St. Vital suburb of Winnipeg in 1968. Situated on a flat, treed river lot and tiered on two levels at the riverbank, the house derives specific inspiration from the tradition of the Prairie home: the multi-leveled sloping roof is a direct reference to the lean-to frames of Prairie houses, while the bellied bow window, of the living-room echoes images of western grain elevators. The exterior of the house is constructed in standard western timber frame and covered with cedar shakes. The wood-framed windows are carefully planned as strong, clearly defined apertures breaking up the uniformity of the weathered, hardscrabble surface. Inside, the freestanding clay tile and pipe fireplace serves as the interior focal point, "spaces and levels interlock[ing] around this pivot in a continuous flow." [2] The interior follows the classic Prairie model: the enclosed central family area acting as the origin point for a series of flowing spaces illuminated by strategically placed windows inviting morning light into the bedrooms and providing a view of the sun setting over the river from the living room, dining room, studio and master sleeping spaces. ![]() ![]() * * * |
