Brick Factory

The high demand for building materials in Fernie encouraged the development of a local brick factory. It was built in West Fernie near the Elk Valley Lumber Company mill.Fine clay from the Coal Creek bed where it enters the Elk River provided a ready supply for the manufacture of Fernie bricks. This "gumbo" was also found in low-lying areas where the Elk River and Coal Creek may have flowed long before. The clay contained less iron-oxide than most clay used to make bricks so that when fired it turned yellow. The brickworks also produced pink bricks, which were used on the insides of many buildings constructed in Fernie.

Many buildings made using the distinctive yellow bricks can still be seen in Fernie. They include the former Knox Methodist Church, now the Masonic Hall, and the Ingram Block, housing North Ridge Sounds.

Much of Fernie’s brickwork was done by Krummer and FullJames contractors who specialized in lime, cement and brick works.
