Communication - At the turn of the century people communicated with one another through the mail or by the newspaper

Financial - Fernie was a small mining community but seemed to have a prosperous future, this made it very appealing to Canadian banking institutions

Retail - Fernie had become one of the largest towns in the East Kootenays in the early 1900’s and as it’s population grew much needed businesses were established

Brick Factory - manufactured bricks used in many of Fernie’s historical buildings still seen today

Brewery - Fernie beer was said to be continentally famous

Utilities - In the early 1900’s Fernie was said to be a town ahead of its time boasting many services other communities did not yet have

Railroads - opened up the East Kootenays for settlement and allowed the exploitation of its natural resources
