First store built in Old Town, 1897

With the development of the Crow’s Nest Pass Coal Company and the expansion of the CPR through the Elk Valley came the birth of Fernie. A cluster of small mining shacks were built along the banks of Coal Creek. But the new town of Fernie, with its new homes and businesses along Victoria (Second) Avenue, quickly surpassed this "Old Town." As Fernie’s population grew, so did the town’s businesses.

In 1904, Fernie was incorporated as a city. It had become one of the largest communities in the East Kootenay, with several grocery and butcher shops, department stores, jewellers, druggists and other much needed businesses.
