Passengers & Freight

Railroads played a vital role in developing Fernie, as they were the chief means of transportation for passengers and freight.

Food, hardware, and clothing, virtually any hard goods, were delivered by the railroads. Parcels and postal mail was also delivered by rail. For example, if someone ordered something from the Eatons catalog, or shipped a package to a friend, it would likely be shipped by train.

The railroads offered daily passenger service throughout their stations in the Elk Valley. Passenger service was fast and reliable, and generally quite affordable for the average person. In Fernie, the MF&M provided passenger service for the residents of Coal Creek, and also for miners who lived in Fernie but worked at the Coal Creek mine. The GNR and CPR offered the ability to travel from Fernie to virtually anywhere in North America by virtue of their large rail networks and connections with other railroads.
