The Library contains approximately 18,000 books, including rare books, periodicals, and published materials preserved on microform. More than 4,500 of these historic objects can only be found here. This includes 800 microfiche sheets and 538 reels of microfilm. The library is an invaluable resource for researchers in many fields. The librarian at the fortress often receives requests from other institutional libraries. Where possible, researchers are accepted by appointment. Fortunately, the fortress public databases are now available on the Louisbourg's Institute website. The Fortress of Louisbourg library shares the system used by the National Library of Canada. There are several different holding sections contained within the library, including the following. The Picture File Holdings section contains examples of published 16th to the 18th century Pictures and Illustrations. Serial Holdings contains examples of published serials and periodicals. Microfilm holdings contains a variety of materials recorded in microfilm form. These include: 16 and 35 mm microfilm microfiche books, modern and rare reports, in-house and Parks Canada calendars pamphlets Machine-readable holdings includes the materials that are computer or equipment-based: reel-to-reel film video cassettes and tapes records audio cassettes CDs floppy disks
