War Memorial

Burlington Ontario War Memorial
Source: We Will Remember

Grade: ten
Time: One period (70 minutes)

Digital Collections Used:
We Will Remember: War Monuments in Canada

Expectations:
Students will:

  • use the Internet as a research tool.
  • use the Internet for communication.
  • use the Internet to promote local history.
  • associate previous lessons with local history.
  • define terms: Royal Canadian Legion.
Preparation:
  • Ensure that Internet access is available for the final half of period.
  • Learn if there is a W.W.II monument in your town. Also, some older high schools have plaques commemorating students killed in action.
  • Arrange for a member of the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion or other local military personal to meet the students at the monument or cenotaph or invite the person to the school for a talk.
  • If you do plan to take the class out of the building, arrange for permission slips well in advance.

Lesson Plan:

  1. Take class to a local W.W.II monument in order to demonstrate that those soldiers were very similar themselves. If possible, have a Legionnaire give a talk about his experiences. Do a rubbing of the monument to display in the classroom. (Some communities have a Military Museum, cenotaph or other type of war tribute.  Perhaps these locations and/or personal could serve as additional or other options.
  2. Back in the classroom, have students check to see the local monument is listed in Digital Collections We Will Remember. If not, brainstorm reasons why it should be concluded and then e-mail them to the Commission.
  3. Students add to their "World War II Glossary":
    • - Royal Canadian Legion
  4. Any remaining time should be used for review.

Evaluation Opportunities:

  • Let's give them a day off, okay?
