Habit prismatic crystals frequently twinned which produces a cross-check or "tartan" look on the mineral face.
Cleavage good to perfect.
Fracture uneven.

Specific Gravity 2.54-2.57
Color white to pale yellow, and in rare circumstances red or green.
Luster vitreous, transparent to translucent.
Streak white.
Distinguishing features the cross-checked or "tartan" appearance is characteristic of microcline.
Uses green variety is polished and formed into beads for use as jewelry.
