Habit tabular growth. Rarer forms are elongated tetragonal prisms.
Cleavage perfect.
Fracture uneven.
Hardness 6-7
Specific Gravity 2.78
Color has a great variety; pale to dark yellow, greenish yellow, dark green, grayish brown to dark brown, colorless, pale pink, lemon yellow to orange-yellow and can often show a zoning of colors.
Luster vitreous to dull or greasy and is transparent to translucent.
Streak none.
Distinguishing features most tabular crystals are opaque and typically color zoned with a yellow center progressing to a green outer edge.
