1818-1870: Special Events
- 1818
- Year of the first official Regatta held
to coincide with the 58th Anniversary of King George III's
coronation on September 22nd, 1760. It was held
in the St. John's Harbour.
- 1820
- Death of King George III in January, probably
no Regatta held.
- 1826
- First official Regatta Committee was formed.
This committee was called the Amateurs of Boat Racing.
- 1830
- Death of King George IV in June, probably no
Regatta held.
- 1837
- Death of King William IV in June, probably no
Regatta held.
- 1846
- Fire in city in June, probably no Regatta held.
- 1856
- Novelty race consisting of women's crews takes place.
This is not on the official program, but was added as a novelty attraction.
A crew from Quidi Vidi defeated a crew from the Battery. Women would
not row in the St. John's Regatta for another 93 years.
- 1860
- His Royal Highness Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later King
Edward VII) arrives on the vessel HMS Hero and attends the Regatta. He offers
one hundred pounds to the winners of the Fishermen's Race.
- This is the first of three Royal visits that will take place during the
history of the Regatta, each exactly 59 years apart.
- 1861
- Political infighting causes much unrest and turmoil in
Newfoundland. It is decided that having a public gathering as large as the
Regatta may incite a riot among the people, so the Regatta is cancelled
and will not return for 10 years.
