Activity Description:
After the visit to Roedde House, set up various stations with "labour-saving inventions":
printing: Have students select lead type, lock it in the form, ink the type and print it on paper.
Compare this process in terms of time, money and aesthetic results with writing one's name by typewriter and by computer.
writing: Take a quill pen, nib and waterproof ink and practice the elaborate cursive methods of the McLeans method. (You may find an old workbook in your stockroom.) Then try the same with a ballpoint pen or felt marker.
food preparation/egg beaters: (might need to have demonstration) Compare time and results when beating ingredients with a spoon, beating by hand beater, beating with electric machine. Be sure to include clean up time! food preparation: drying food (such as apple slices), canning food, freezing food
