MEET THE ROEDDES
Emma Matilda Roedde: (1886-1960)
(Back to Meet the Roeddes)

Emma

Emma with her daughters

My mother Emma in the middle, with me (Gwen) to the left and my sister Kay to the right on the porch at Roedde House.

My Mother Emma Matilda was also born in California. She became the oldest child in the Roedde family after her sister Anna Henrietta died. As mother got older, she developed a love for creating hats. She really wanted to be a milliner. But Grandfather said, "No daughter of mine is going to work!"However, she was already working here at the house, helping Grandmother, because Grandfather would bring all these men from the office home for lunch, and you can imagine having to put out a big meal for four to six men every day of the week.

Kay and Gwen Cather

Gwen (right) and sister Kay Roedde

When Mother grew up she married my dad Arthur Budd Cather in 1908, and had me, Gwen (my full name is Emma Gwendolyn) and my sister Kae (Kathleen Frances). We were all living in another part of Vancouver, but from 1914 (when I was four years old) we lived at Grandpa and Grandmother Roedde's house with some of my aunts and uncles until father returned from the war. My father Arthur was the captain in the Royal Navy and went over to Europe to fight in the Mediterranean.
