Thorfinnr Thordarson

Drawing: Thorvald Eiriksson's battle with the Skraelings, about A.D. 1003

Thorfinnr Karlsefni Thordarson is believed to be the first European to try to live in North America. He led an expedition sometime between 1003 to 1015 to colonize Vinland. At first the Norse were friendly with the Skraelings (First Nations). After a while they fought and the Vikings were forced to go back to Greenland.

It's a Boy!
Thorfinnr, a rich Norwegian, travelled to Vinland to start a colony. He had three ships, 160 men and women and some livestock. Leifr Eiriksson had offered the use of the houses he had built on a previous visit. While there, Gudridr, Thorfinnr's wife, gave birth to a son. They named him Snorri and he is most likely the first European to be born in what is now known as Newfoundland.
