The Sir John Franklin Mystery

Early Life

John Franklin was born in Spilsby, England. His father did not want him to join the navy, but he made up his mind early to do so. In October 1800, he joined the navy and fought in the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801 and in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. This was one of the most important naval battles in British history.

In 1801 he went to explore Australia with his uncle, Captain Matthew Flinders, in the ship HMS Investigator. The expedition went to Australia and experienced many difficulties, including scurvy and a shipwreck. He left the navy in 1815.
