Robert McClure and the Secret of the Northwest Passage

Introduction

Portrait: Sir Robert McClure

Sir Robert McClure
Born 1807, died 1873

Robert McClure was an officer in the British Royal Navy and an explorer. He commanded HMS Investigator from 1850 until 1854. His expedition is credited with being the first European one to successfully travel the Northwest Passage, even though not all of it was by ship. He did this while trying to find out what had happened to Sir John Franklin.
