Flag British Columbia

British Columbia is great for mineral collecting and one can obtain mineral specimens from a number of localities. Fine specimens of fluorite and barite come from the Rock Candy Mine near Grand Forks. Precious opal is found near Vernon, and gem quality saphires were recently discovered in the Slocan Valley region near Nelson. Rhodonite and jade localities also exist in B.C. Many other gem quality minerals are known to occur as well (see the Canadian Rockhound, Winter/Spring 1999 issue).
