Internet Connectivity in Public Libraries

These statistics on the number of Canadian public library service points that are connected to the Internet were compiled in June, 1997.

In all of Canada, there are 3400 public library service points, of which 979 provide the general public with access to the Internet and another 196 provide access to library staff only, for a total of 1175 connected libraries.

In Alberta there are 310 public library , of which 72 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access to library staff only, for a total of 72 connected libraries.

In British Columbia there are 230 public library , of which 165 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access to library staff only, for a total of 165 connected libraries.

In Manitoba there are 107 public library , of which 44 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 44 connected libraries.

In New Brunswick there are 61 public library , of which 18 provide the public with access to the Internet and 1 provides access only to library staff, for a total of 19 connected libraries.

In Newfoundland there are 98 public library , of which 52 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 27 connected libraries.

In Nova Scotia there are 75 public library , all 75 of which provide the public with access to the Internet for a total of 75 connected libraries.

In the Northwest Territories there are 19 public library , of which 1 provides the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 1 connected library.

In Ontario there are 1192 public library , of which 250 provide the public with access to the Internet and another 150 provide access only to library staff, for a total of 400 connected libraries.

In Prince Edward Island there are 22 public library , all 22 of which provide the public with access to the Internet, for a total of 6 connected libraries.

In Quebec there are 945 public library , of which 240 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 240 connected libraries.

In Saskatchewan there are 323 public library , of which 33 provide the public with access to the Internet and another 45 provide access only to library staff, for a total of 78 connected libraries.

In Yukon there are 18 public library , of which 7 provide the public with access to the Internet and none provide access only to library staff, for a total of 7 connected libraries.

Note: A service point is defined as any individual library branch/location or bookmobile unit.
