What is LibraryNet?

Canadian public libraries have been providing information, education, and recreation to Canadians for over a century and a half. Today they are defining new roles for themselves as economic incubators, community development agents, distributors of electronic information, and centres for life-long learning.

The purpose of LibraryNet is to encourage the growth of these new roles and to help Canadian libraries connect to the information highway and to one another. This is a cooperative venture on the part of Canada's public libraries, library jurisdictions and agencies, librarians, and Industry Canada.

About LibraryNet

Library Community Consultation Report
At a meeting of the library community with Industry Canada on April 19, 1996, the first proposal for a "LibraryNet" project was made. This report presents the notes from that meeting.
A Concept Paper for LibraryNet
A more in-depth paper was written shortly after, describing the mission and vision behind LibraryNet; why it exists and what its purpose is.
LibraryNet Visioning Meeting Notes
In June 1997, a meeting of the LibraryNet Advisory Committee and other members of the library community took place in Cantley, Québec. Discussion centred on the new roles libraries are playing in the information society, and how LibraryNet could best support these roles.
LibraryNet Advisory Committee
A list of the current members of LibraryNet's Advisory Committee, drawn from the library community across Canada, and the positions they hold.
