Human Rights

The Facts:

  • Human Rights are the "natural" rights with which one is born. These rights include the right to life, education, food and shelter, freedom, citizenship (ability to vote, etc…); as well as economic social and cultural rights.
  • On December 10, 1948, the newly created United Nations implemented the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the aftermath of the Holocaust, people around the world felt that it was necessary to do anything possible to prevent such events from happening again.
  • The first paragraph of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states its basic goal and philosophy: "Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world."
  • The wing of the United Nations that is responsible for human rights is the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The High Commissioner's Office promotes "universal enjoyment of all human rights by giving practical effect to the will and resolve of the world community as expressed by the United Nations; Promotes universal ratification and implementation of international standards; Supports human rights organs and treaty monitoring bodies; Responds to serious violations of human rights; Undertakes preventive human rights action; Provides education, information advisory services and technical assistance in the field of human rights."
  • While the idea and foundation of Human Rights is traced back to 17th century Europe (most notably England and France), Human Rights have been supported and embraced all around the world.
