Over the years, many events have helped to establish the communities in the Mississagi River Valley. Whether these events were on an international or a local scale, they were very important in allowing the communities of the Mississagi River Valley to become what they are today - small, friendly, and economically successful.

1670's - Hudson's Bay posts are built along the major rivers.

1800's - North West Company posts are built in the area.

1846 - Copper mining begins at Bruce Mines.

1869 - Logging begins at Thessalon. Surveying of the area seems to have begun in the 1870's.

1879 - Arrival of settlers at Iron Bridge.

1882 - Arrival of first settlers at Wharncliffe.

        - Arrival of first settlers at Goldenburg.

1885 - CPR builds a track from Sudbury to Sault Ste. Marie.

1886 - Arrival of pioneers at Kynoch.

1888 - Electricity is first installed in Sault Ste. Marie (EC 133).

        - Wharncliffe Post Office is established.

1891 - Construction of Goldenburg Presbyterian Church.

1892 - A scarlet fever epidemic hits Kynoch, killing many.

1897 - Bellingham Presbyterian Church is constructed.

1902 - Construction of Wharncliffe Methodist Church.

1903 - Telephone service first comes to Sowerby.

1907 - Opening of Parkinson SS#3 (Kynoch School).

1912 - Opening of Kynoch Post Office; Kynoch gets its name.

1914-1918 - First World War.

1915 - First survey of the Mississagi River is done by Ontario Hydro.

1929 - Stock Market crashes.

1929 - Formation of the Parkinson and Kynoch Telephone Company Ltd.

        - Wharncliffe receives first telephone services.

        - Kynoch Community Hall is built.

1933 - Kynoch Post Office closes.

1939-1945 - Second World War.

1947 - Construction begins on George W. Rayner Generating Station.

1948 - Mississagi Fire.

1950 - George W. Rayner Generating Station is in service.

1953 - Electricity comes to Kynoch and Wharncliffe.

1954 - Bell takes over the Parkinson and Kynoch telephone company.

1960 - Wharncliffe school closes.

1967 - Parkinson and Grassett school closes.

1968 - Wharncliffe United Church is sold and last services are held.

1969 - Aubrey Falls dam comes into service.

1970 - Wells Generating Station comes into service.

1971 - Wharncliffe Community Hall is built.

1997 - Bellingham United Church celebrates its centennial.
