The Mississagi river was used as a trade route long before Hydro moved into town. The Natives in the area were nomads who used the river for hunting and fishing as well as using the river as a means of transportation. As times changed the area became a lumbering territory and a settling area.

One of the well known landmarks at Aubrey Falls before the station was built was The Old Log Chute. It was used particularly in the 1920's and 1930's, when the area was logged for its huge white pines. The Chute was made of thick planking and lined with heavy sheet metal. Once the logs were down the chute they continued to go down the river, all the way to Blind River where they were cut into lumber.

The Aubrey Falls Generating Station is the northern most station on the Mississagi, located midway between Thessalon and Chapleau on Highway 129. Before the dam was built Aubrey Falls was a great tourist attraction. People would come from miles away to see the breathtaking falls. To protect this great attraction Ontario Hydro agreed to the Water Power Agreement. This agreement stated that as of 1970, 8.5 cm of water from the head pond would flow over the rocks to maintain the beautiful falls. Thus, Aubrey Falls is still one of the main tourist attractions in the Mississagi River Valley.
