The Outpost Lodge

The Outpost Lodge was started in 1934, when Clarence Hodge had 1 cabin on the property. By 1939, he and his wife had built 9 cabins and a lodge. All of the cabins except one were built from local lumber bought from the J.J.McFadden lumber mill. The one cabin which was not built from that lumber was built from logs which were floated across from an island in the middle of Jobammageeshig Lake.

When Hodge heard about the flooding of Hooverville and the making of Tunnel Lake, around 1948, he decided to sell the camp. He had found out that the one thing he loved most about the area was about to be taken away from him - his canoe route down the Mississagi River. Hodge loved to canoe down the Mississagi River, portage at Grand Falls, and end up at Hooverville. Since his whole canoe route would be altered, Hodge no longer wanted to live in the area.

Bill and Essie Smith bought the Outpost Lodge around 1948. They owned it until 1969, when the activity at the Hydro colony between Jobamageeshig Lake and Chub Lake ruined the "wilderness" atmosphere of the Outpost Lodge. They then sold the camp to a German man who ran it for a year, until his wife died.

At that time, Fred Knecht was the owner of Kegos Camp. He sold Kegos to the Gherings, and bought the Outpost Lodge from the German man in 1970. During the time that Fred owned the camp, he sold it once but the people who bought it had made some bad investments, and were forced to sell the camp back to Mr. Knecht.

In 1987, Jim and Anne Kehoe bought the Outpost Lodge, and live there now with their two little boys. The camp now consists of 8 cabins, a lodge with rentable suites, and various utility buildings.
