H

Picture from a Haggadah

Haggadah - The book used at the Passover seder. The lessons in the Haggadah, taken from the Talmud , are taught through stories and illustrations.

Haman - Anti-Semitic figure in the story of Purim. When his name is mentioned during Purim festivities, children shake graggers (noise-makers) to drown out the sound of his name.

Hanukiah - A specific type of menorah used for Chanukah.

Hasidism - Originating in Poland in the 18th century.

Havdalah - Saturday night service in honor of the end of Shabbat.

Hebrew - Known as the language of the Jewish people, it is also the language of worship in Judaism. The Torah and most other books used in worship are written in Hebrew.

Huppah - The canopy on the pulpit that the Rabbi and the wedding party stand under during a marriage ceremony.
