Bareneed

Population: 194 (1996)
167 (1976)

Located about 2kms southwest of Port de Grave, at the base of the Peninsula is the fishing community of Bareneed.

In the seventeen hundreds William Thoresby in his " A Narrative of God's Love to William Thoresby" mentioned the community of Bareneed. Around 1836 Edward Wix in his " Six Months of a Newfoundland Missionary's Journal" mentioned Bareneed.

A tradition became current in the nineteenth century that the name Bareneed refers to the landscape and the poverty and the difficult lifestyle in the community.

Prior to eighteen hundred Bareneed was not mentioned as a community separate from Port de Grave. The community was probably settled first by English stationers later by year-round settlers, in the late sixteen hundreds, like the community of Port de Grave.

New industries such as, the opening of the Bell Island Mines and the building of the railway attracted workers away from the community. During this time (between 1901 and 1921) population of Bareneed fell from 410 to 291.
