Located on the northern tip of the north side of Conception Bay, near Baccalieu Island is the fishing settlement of Bay de Verde. The community covers about 2.6 square kilometres squared on a small neck of land and is exposed to the open sea. The name originates from the French for Green Bay (which is how John Guy referred to it in 1610) although E.R Seary (1971) notes additional names including Bay de Vardes, Bay of Arts, and Bay of Herbes.

Although we don't know exactly when it first settled, Bay de Verde was a well established fishing community when the first Newfoundland Census was taken in 1675.

Bay de Verde abandoned both the Bank Fishery and the Labrador fishery by the early 1900's, although before this they relied on the cod fishery as its primary economic source.

Quinlan Brothers fish plant is the most successful business venture that started at Bay de Verde.
