Burnt Point

Population: 527 (1996) includes Gull Island

Located about 32kms north of Carbonear, along the north shore of Conception Bay is the fishing community of Burnt Point. Burnt Point was " so called, by reason of the Trees that were on it are burnt down" according to The English Pilot.

The economy of Burnt Point was based primarily on the small boat inshore fishery until the 1860's, when the seal hunt and Labrador fishery became the predominant industries.

In 1887, 14 men from Burnt Point died in a ship disaster during their expedition for fish and seals.

Both cod-liver oil factories established in 1921 continued production until 1945, although the fisheries decreased in the 1930's.
