" Discover the Heritage of the Baccalieu Trail "
Population:
(166) 1976 A small fishing community surrounded on the north by Low Point and on the south by Lower Island Cove. Like other Newfoundland communities, Caplin Cove was probably named for the numerous capelin in its waters. Caplin Cove had its own integrated elementary school for Anglican, United Church and Salvation Army denominations students to attend. The growth of service centres (Carbonear and Harbour Grace) combined with the harsh environment of Conception Bay contributed to the decline in the population and tradition in Caplin Cove. The growth of the fresh frozen fish industry, nearby plants, improved roads and new educational facilities contributed to Caplin Cove's survival.
