In January 1999, the Baccalieu Trail Heritage Corporation (BTHC) undertook a project to record the Heritage structures of the region, that predate 1920 and those of unique architectural design or significance.

The information has been recorded using the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s data base format. Photographs of the buildings as well as Global Positioning System (GPS) readings were taken and the architectural features were noted. Information relating to age, ownership, construction, alterations, etc of the buildings was obtained from various sources throughout the communities.

In September 2001, the BTHC, through Industry Canada (Canada's Digital Collections), hired a webmaster and research assistant to build a web site appropriately titled " Discover the Heritage of the Baccalieu Trail". A requirement was to create a photo gallery for the communities using the pictures from the database.

In December 2001, phase one of the project will be completed.

Information for the various pages including history, heritage, tourism, archaeology, whaling, and so on have been compiled from various resources. Prior to posting, the information was proofread by the Corporation's Chief Archaeologist, Mr. William Gilbert, Manuscript Archivist for the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador Mr. Greg Walsh; and Corporation Director Ms. Chris Rolton. Changes noted by editing were applied to the pages to be posted before the deadline. Given the limited time and the resources available, there maybe errors and/or omissions in the documents. Subject to continued funding, it is proposed to create a phase two to the Discover the Heritage of the Baccalieu Trail web site. Then, more emphasis can be placed on creating additional pages containing information on our rich heritage, unique culture, and interesting history.
