Gull Island
Population: 527 (1996) includes Burnt Point
362 (1981)

Located between Northern Bay and Burnt Point is the fishing community of Gull Island.

Gull Island was named for the small rocky, bird nesting island of Gull Island.
A berry-picking area known as "under the tilts" located inland from Northern Bay was believed to be used by Gull Island residents as a winter residence.

Gull Island has an exposed beach to the southeast and southwest, located within a short distance of the fishing grounds used by the local fishermen. Nearby berry grounds and small patches of land supported only subsistence-type gardening.

End of 18th Century - A small population of year-round settlers and a large number of seasonal fishing servants settled the locations of Gull Island, Burnt Point, Low Point, Northern Bay, Job's Cove and Western Bay.

1979 - Birdie Doyle states the settlement of Gull Island is divided into four areas: the Road, the Folly, the Ridge and the Gulch.
