Bishop's Cove (Bread & Cheese Cove) - History Timeline

1755 - The first recorded settler at Bishop=s Cove is Sarah Barrett.

1763 - J.Smith and John Percey settle at Bishop's Cove.

1785 - William and Richard Gosse settle.

1787 - Richard Pope settles.

1790 - David Barrett settles.

1807 - St. John=s Church of England is first recorded at Bishop=s Cove.

1839 - Bishop=s Coves first school, run by Newfoundland School Society, is opened.

1836 - 1845 - Bishop of the Church of England renames Bread and Cheese Cove, along with Cooper=s Head to

=s Cove @

Mid 1800's - 1970's - Labrador fishery is prosecuted, along with the annual seal hunt.

1857 - School run by Newfoundland School Society is erected.

1880's - Railway which passed through Tilton causes some residents to move to Tilton from Bishop=s Cove. Residents of Bishop=s Cove and Spaniard=s Bay use Tilton as a Awinter-house@ area.

1895 - 1966 - Opening of the Bell Island Mine provides work for some residents of Bishop=s Cove=s.

1981 - Residents are employed in the nearby communities of Harbour Grace, Carbonear, and Bay Roberts as fishermen, construction workers, and at various other occupations.
