Bristol's Hope - History Timeline


1675 – This settlement was called Musketta Cove. Consisted of 2 planters, 9 children, 16 men, 5 boats and 4 stages.

1677 - Census lists 2 planters and 9 children, 22 men servants and 1 woman servant. Also, 38 head of cattle, 2 sheep, 20 hogs and 4 gardens.

1729 – "Muskete" was included in one of the six newly established judicial districts .

1750 – Coughlan and Hooper from "Mosquito" were the first to set up stations for the prosecuting seal hunt in Labrador.

1828 – First school was opened in a private dwelling.

1830’s – A church was built in Mosquito by the Wesleyans.

1836 – 90 acres of land was cultivated, 508 234 Lbs of potatoes were grown, and 13 heads of cattle were kept.

1884 – About 223 acres of land was reported under cultivation, and 56 cattle were kept.

1884 – The Labrador fishery became important for this settlement and in this year 69 men were involved with it.

1910 – The name was changed from Mosquito to Bristol’s Hope.
