Bryants Cove - History Timeline

1675 - Census lists Thomas Hibbs, his wife and three children at Bryant's Cove.

1677 - Hibbs and his family are joined by William Mugwood. Twelve servants are also employed there.

1836 - Population is listed as 277 people, 171 Church of England and 86 Roman Catholic.

1845 - The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel opens and runs Bryant's Cove first school.

1855 - St. Andrews, the first recorded church is built.

1874 - 1924 - Many residents work in the Labrador fishery.

1879 - A new Church of England Church is built.

1914 - Men from Bryant's Cove are involved in the seal hunt, eight men lose their lives during the sinking of the Southern Cross. People are also employed in other industries including, mining, farming, and construction.

1921 - Population of Bryant's Cove grows to 395.

1935 - Inshore cod fishery which has been the main economic resource since the first catch in 1675, declines.

1950's - First government wharf is built.

1977 - Since this year, residents fish mostly squid and capelin.

1978 - A new wharf is built to replace one built in 1950's.

1980 - About 20 men are working as full-time fishermen.

1981 - Children attends Kindergarten to Grade 3 in Bryant's Cove, Grades 4 - 8 in Upper Island Cove,
Grades 9 -11 in Bay Roberts.
