Butlerville (The Gully) - History Timeline

1840 - Butler family settles here, giving Butlerville its name.

1850 (circa) - The Parsons settle at Butlerville.

1856 - Franey family settles.

1867 - Seymour family settles.

1870 - Power family settles.

1880 - Richards family settles. The Richards are descended from William Richards, an English immigrant who came to Butlerville from London.

1906 - 1963 - Butlerville has a Roman Catholic school.

1920 - A Roman Catholic priest in the area, Rev. Dr. Whalen renames Athe Gully@ Butlerville.

1945 - An Anglican school opens, prior to this both Roman Catholic and Anglican students attended the Roman Catholic school.

1945 - Census records 139 people. Prior to this year, Butlerville=s population was included with nearby Bay Roberts and Shearstown.

1981 - Two small saw mills are operating in Butlerville. The majority of employment is in service industries and construction work in Conception Bay and St. John=s. Few men are still involved in the Labrador fishery.

Roman Catholic families belong to the Bay Roberts mission of the Parish of North River. Anglican families are members of St. Mark
=s Anglican Church, Shearstown, in the Parish of Bay Roberts.

Primary and elementary school students attend St. Mark
=s School, Shearstown. High school students attend Ascension Collegiate, Bay Roberts.
