Clarke's Beach - History Timeline

1834 – The Colonial and Continental Church Society opened the first school in the general store at nearby Salmon Cove.

1857 - Census recorded the population of 280, however, indicating shows that the area was settled before this time.

1874 – The first Methodist Church was built.

1880’s and 1890’s – A sawmill operated by Horwood Lumber Company, which employed 112 men was in operation.

1890’s – Fishery began to decline.

1909 - Williams Drug Store opens.

1920 – Fish cakes and drums were being made.

1922 – Pentecostal Assemblies arrived.

1924 – One of the first Pentecostal churches in Newfoundland was built.

1940 – Clarence Moore started a general store (he later went into trucking and wholesaling)

1944 - Garfield Ralph's grocery, dry goods and hardware store opens.

1971 – Everett Moores established a supermarket.

1980 – Chesley Filler & Son Limited which was begun by Samuel Batten in 1908, is bought by Chesley Filler.

1980 - Major religious denominations included the Pentecostal Assemblies, the United Church and the Salvation Army.
