Georgetown - History Timeline

1820's - Small fishing settlement of Bulls Cove is founded.

1891 - Census records a population of 47. The majority are Methodist, and include one English- born resident.

1901 - The population rises to 155 residents. A United Church school-chapel is erected. One Labrador vessel is reported to be used by Georgetown fishermen, presumably out of nearby Bull Cove.

1921 - Bull Cove is completely abandoned, its residents move inland to the area of Georgetown.

1935 - The population reaches 187.

1951 - The population is listed as 240.

1961 - The population is listed as 271.

1971 - A new United Church is built to replace the structure built in 1901. A tourist hotel, two general merchandise stores, and a local club are developed.

1982 - Residents commut for employment to the growing nearby service sectors of Bay Roberts, Harbour Grace, and Carbonear. Georgetown students attend school in nearby Brigus and Cupids.
