Green's Harbour - History Timeline

Circa 1800 – The first families arrive from southern England, Old Perlican and Heart’s Content.

1800 – 1801 – John Green is listed as occupying a fishing room during the winter.

1857 - Census reports the population as 63.

1858 – Edgar March and William Brace are listed as a residents.

1860’s (late) – Census reports the first school in Green’s Harbour.

1869 – Edward Simmons is listed as a resident.

1871 – Lovell’s Newfoundland Dictionary lists the following family names : Cooper, Day, Harnum, Hopkins, Houch, Matcher, Penny and Rowe.

1874 - Census reports the population as 302.

1880 – The first Anglican Church is built.

1884 – The first Methodist church is erected as part of the Hant’s Harbour circuit.

1891 – Two schools are operating, one Methodist, and one Church of England. Each denomination maintains separate schools until 1963 – 1964.

1900’s (early) – A number of sawmills are in Old Perlican.

1908 – The old Methodist church is replaced by a building designed and built by James Rowe.

1915 – 1935 - Drover's sawmill is sending dressed lumber to St. John’s. Other mill owners includes Vernon Tayor, Samuel Cooper, Joseph Green, and George and Charles Harnum.

1930 - A store and shipyard are started by Jimmy Green.

1930 (August) – The first Salvation Army meetings are held and the Salvation Army errects a barracks.

1931 – A Salvation Army school opens.

1930’s and 1940’s – A small boom takes place in the saw milling industry.

1955 – A second Salvation Army building is opened.

1960’s – Longliners are employed, and the turbot fishery is discontinued for a time.

1964 – Green’s Harbour Integrated High School opens.

1965 – Eleazer Crocker attempts to build longliners but the industry does not continue for long. The inshore fishery remains significant.

1969 – Green’s Harbour Elementary School opens. Three saw mills are still operating in Green’s Harbour.

1975 – Funds are obtained for a rainbow trout hatchery to be located at nearby Hopeall River.

1975 (May) – Green’s Harbour Historic Church Association is formed to preserve the Methodist church built in 1908 that was threatened with demolition.

1977 – The number of local fishermen drops to about 5 crews.

1982 – Upper Trinity South Development Association slates Green’s Harbour as the area for the regional office. All students attend the two integrated schools opened in 1964 and 1969.
