Heart's Delight / Islington - History Timeline

1785 - Trinity church records lists its first entry for Heart's Delight, the birth of Elizabeth Wolfrey daughter of William and Elizabeth.

1808 - The Reids arrive in Heart’s Delight.

1811 – Families of Harnums, Sooleys and Crockers are listed in the community.

1813 – Family name of Legge is first listed in the community.

1823 – The Family name of Worthman is listed for the community. With a population of 60, a community is growing. The Baptismal records of St. Paul’s Anglican Parish at Trinity included the pioneer family names of: Bryants, Reid (Read), Harnum, Sooleys, Crockers, Legge, and Worthman.

1823 – Baptismal records from St Paul’s Anglican Parish in Trinity lists 33 individuals who were baptized by an Anglican clergymen who visits Hearts Delight on July 21 & 22 of this year. Hearts Delight is made up of 13 families with a total population of 60.

1836 – The population is 167 with 165 Protestants and 2 Catholics.

1845 – Census records 98.1% (Protestant) and 1.9% (Catholic) for Heart’s Delight. Islington is 100% protestant.

Circa 1857 - First church serving Heart’s Delight / Islington is built.

1857 – Census recorded 98% (Protestant) and 2%(Catholic) for Heart’s Delight, and Islington was 100% protestant. Nine immigrants to Hearts Delight-Islington lists England as their place of birth.

1885 – The first United Church is built (site of present day United Church Cemetery).

1895 (May 10) – A second Anglican Church is built to replace first one. Rev. Llewellyn Jones holds a service and consecrates the new building.

1896 (July 15) – The Salvation Army opens a Corps maintained it until 1946.

1932 – A United Church school is established.

1939 – A new three room school is built called "St. Matthew’s Anglican School".

1969 (September) – Epiphany Elementary is officially opened.
