Lead Cove - History Timeline

1874 – Census records eight families in Lead Cove and nearby Sibleys Cove.

1901 – The strong Methodist community of Lead Cove has 57 residents. The population is too low to support a church or school so they relied for these services on Sibleys Cove and Brownsdale.

1916 – Cod liver oil factory, established by William Button, is the first commercial activity in Lead Cove.

1920 – William Button builts a small shop on the "highway".

1960’s and 1970’s – Residents abandoned the inshore fishery and find work outside Lead Cove.

1990 – Because most of the homes in Lead Cove were clustered around the highway, there is little indication that the community once relied so much on the fishery.
