Lower Island Cove - History Timeline

1600’s (late) – European migratory fisherman are visiting this area. Legend says that a treasure was buried by the pirates at Flambro Head.

1760’s and 1770’s - Lawrence Coughlan is stationed at Harbour Grace and is the first known missionary to visit Lower Island Cove.

1768 – Local tradition tells that the first permanent resident was Philip Luce (or Louis) who was a Jersey fisherman.

1780 – Wesleyans construct a church.

1793 – A reference to an early resident is carved in a slate rock stating, "N.N. died Nov. 1793 aged 57 years."

1796 – The community is first referred to as Lower Island Cove instead of just Island Cove to differentiate it from Upper Island Cove near Harbour Grace.

1800’s – The community has its own mercantile premises, one of the first is established by Richard Rankin of Harbour Grace.

1836 – The population is 551, 36 of these are Roman Catholics. The Wesleyans construct a school.

1836 – Supplies are obtained from Carbonear and Harbour Grace and twenty-eight acres of land are under cultivation.

1870’s – Lower Island Cove is a commercial centre,with eight merchants and traders operating there.

1884 – The census reports a population of 937. Family names include; Bursey, Clerk, Driscoll, Garland, Louis, Morris, Rogers, Shano (LeShane), Sparkes, Snelgrove and Wheeler. Most of these people were from England, the rest from Ireland and the Channel Islands.

1944 – Salvation Army establishes itself in the community.

1970’s – Children who formerly attended school in Lower Island Covenow attend a central school built in nearby Western Bay.

1990 – Most residents work outside the community except for a few fisherman. Common family names include; Bursey, Cooper, Garland, Gillingham, Johnson, Knapman, LeShane, Lewis, Morris, Reid, Snelgrove, Sparkes, Turner and Wheeler.

1990’s – The community's boundaries are extended about 3 km along the highway from Redlands to Flambro Head.
