Makinsons - History Timeline

1840’s - Church of England clergymen from Clarke’s Beach visit the area.

1884 – A railway line is built to Harbour Grace from St. John's via Whitbourne. The rough roads into the country from Clarke’s Beach, Cupids and Brigus are extended to provide access to the railway at Hodgewater Pond and Whitbourne.

1898 – The Brigus branch railway line is built, the place where it crossed Hodgewater line becomes a train station, known as Makinsons. Today it is the site of Dawe’s Concrete limited.

1900 – By this date Family names include: Bussey, Cousins, Coveyduct, Curtis, Fowler, Lane, Morgan, Mugford, and Taylor.

1906 - Riverside Woolen Mills is established on Goulds Brook. The Mill is owned by the Macpherson family of St. Johns. It supplies rugs, blankets, jackets and yarn to the Royal Stores. The mill employes about 20 residents of Makinsons and surrounding communities. It is the largest employer in the area until it closes in1959.

1957 – St. Andrews Anglican Church is consecrated at The Juniper Stump.

1991 Commercial farming has died out, but some people work with the two companies in the community, Pennyecon LTD & Dawe’s Concrete Products LTD.
